Evaluation - Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Well I personally think that my preliminary task was by far better than the final edit of the thriller. Not only because it had a better plot to it but it also had; Better acting, better camera shots and the conventions of a proper thriller. 

If I could redo the Thriller task then I would without hesitation, I believe that it has a lot of potential to be a good thriller, as long as we change it from a football hooligan film to an actual thriller storyline. 

Although my final piece did have some conventions of a thriller, but not many, if my group had more time I think that we could have made something from it, by adding maybe a murder into the mix, and making it a investigation/crime thriller.

The preliminary had dialogue, which involved the audience more, and it gives them something to go off, a sort of indication into what the film may contain. Whereas in our final thriller edit, there was no dialogue and that is where we really slipped up. Using dialogue we could have foreshadowed or hinted to a thriller convention, maybe something involving crime such as; A robbery or a Murder. It would have made the final edit more  like a thriller than it actually was.

We did have a voice over, of the main character, talking about the game, and how he has had troubles with the opposition before. However, due to malfunctions with technology, we unfortunately couldn't upload the voice clip onto the video, and therefore lost out on our plot being narrated for the audience. That in itself could also have made the film have more of  thriller feel, but it didn't fall through.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Adobe Premier Pro

When using this product, I picked up a lot of useful editing skills, that I can use later in the course when we move onto the Music Industry, where we get to make a music video. It took me a few lessons to fully grasp how to use the program, but once I was comfortable, I managed to make an edit. Myself and another member of my group - Aaron Wiles, managed to finish on this final edit: 

                   

Evaluation - Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

My group and I attempted to add in as much hooliganism as possible, including all the clichés such as; Track Jackets (mostly Sergio Tacchini), Football scarves, Snoods etc.
By doing this, we attracted our target audience perfectly, they want to see a proper football thriller, that contains all the clichés and conventions of a real life football match.

We added tension, we did this by videoing two separate groups of football supporters. By doing this, it gives the audience a clear indication as to what the two groups are doing at the same time, it also shows what type of person they are by what they do in each scene.

My group tried to include all of the above, to make the film stand out and draw in our audience properly. Unfortunately we didn't manage to fit all of them into our film, but we added; Crime, Football and Hooliganism. 

Evaluation - Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product? 

My opening sequence is broadly targeting those who like to watch thrillers and enjoy a good film. Then on a smaller scale it is targeting people who have a very fond love for football, and hooliganism. 

My media product would mainly attract fans of films such as; Green Street, Football Factory, Rise of the Footsoldier etc. 
Fans of football, and fans of films containing the main conventions and group representations of a typical football atmosphere. This helps draw the audience into the film, if they have a strong passion for that specific topic, and the film accurately represents that, then they will have a sense of involvement as if they are included themselves in the film.

My typical member of audience would be a middle-aged male, dressed in scruffy clothing and the most enthusiastic passion for Football. They would most likely have the same attitude to those in the film; Ruthless, Careless, Rude, Arrogant etc. 

Evaluation - Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Itasca is a low budget film production company, based in London. 
They might be interested in producing my opening sequence, because from looking at their previous work, it looks very similar to what my group have been working on. The misson of Itasca is to find low budget films and produce them to the right standard for worldwide viewing.

I think that our short opening sequence, had been carried out into a film, with the same potential it carried in the opening sequence, then definitely Itasca would take an interest in it and possibly produce it for us. Itasca use all of their own editing and filming equipment and therefore, produce high quality films at a low budget. 

I think that if our film ever got produced, we would definitely use Itasca for help, this is because they are very good at what they do, and can get it done with minimal hastle. They make short movies into blockbuster hits, with a small budget. 

Evaluation - Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

With my project we aimed to include the social group of, working class hooligans. They were supposed to look scruffy (wearing unpopular brands, football scarves etc.) We had to make sure that the actors had a look of authentication as if they really were football hooligans, and that they genuinely were going to have an all out brawl with a rival team.

I think the costumes that were used in the clip, although unplanned, were perfect for the clip itself. As they brought a sense of hooliganism to the clip, which is what we were going for. We wanted the clip to seem as authentic as possible, this meant getting the atmosphere spot on and making sure that the actors, were acting tough and ruthless, just like real hooligans at football matches.  
I think that the addition of the football scarves really showed that we were trying to make it seem as real as possible, because it showed that the two football fans were really into their football as they were wearing their home teams scarves. The outfit that the main character was wearing (played by myself) was just a casual outfit, and it showed that he didn't really care what he looked like, as he was only going to a football game, no big deal. 

 

We used a tracking shot when the main character walked down the hallway in his house, the camera was placed in front of his face, and followed him all the way to the door. This showed the characters emotions quite clearly, and apart from the obvious bit of smirking, the emotion depicted was a mix between anger and serious. It showed that the character was pumped to go to the match, and he wasn't letting anything bring him down, it also puts him in a position in which he seems powerful, looking tough right into the camera lens is quite intimidating, which shows the audience that he could be a threat during the movie.
As for the other characters, they hardly got much camera time, in fact for the most part they were sat watching a football game, showing that they were getting themselves psyched up for the game ahead. They were sat cheering and chanting for their team on TV, waiting for the lead up to the real game that they were about to go and watch. 

The video itself contained a lot of non diegetic sound, such as the music that we put in, it would have also had the narrative, it would have worked. There was no diegetic sound, no talking, no on scene music etc.
